Competition 2020

Every year, the Lytham St Annes CA holds a Competition for students in years 7-13 to produce and deliver a presentation in 15 minutes or less in response to a particular question about the ancient world.

The Classics Competition 2020 saw four finalists, shortlisted from video entries submitted by students from across the UK, come to AKS Lytham to deliver their presentations and tell the 100-strong audience about the three ancient characters they would invite to a party. There were some fabulous combinations of scandalous figures, after-dinner speakers, jokers, kings, performers, emperors, gods and a chorus of frogs!

Here are the three figures chosen by our President, Professor Michael Scott:

The 2020 Finalists, and their party guests, were:

Thomas Hewitt, Kirkham Grammar School (Herodotus, Tacitus and Livy)

Katherine Baker, Bolton School for Girls (Caligula, Cicero and Artemis)

Connor Irving, Clarendon Sixth Form College (Medea, Pasiphae and Hades)

Jess Harris, Runshaw College (Arachne, Orpheus and Tantalus)

For a full recap of the Final read our blog, Partying Ancient Style! All of the presentations were highly entertaining and engaging and judge, Dr Arlene Holmes-Henderson, had a really tricky decision. Jess Harris was announced as the People’s Choice winner before Connor Irving was crowned 2020 Champion. Congratulations to all who entered and a huge thank you to the Classical Association for sponsoring the competition.
