Classics Competitions 2018

Every year, the Lytham St Annes CA holds a Classics Competition for students in years 7-13 to produce and deliver a presentation in 15 minutes or less in response to a particular question about the ancient world. The competition is free to enter, and offers young people a fabulous opportunity at research and public speaking – further information can be found below.

The Lytham St Annes CA Classics Competition 2018

The Final of this year’s competition took place on Wednesday 21st March as members, visitors and guests assembled to listen to four students – selected by the LSA CA committee from the video entries for this nationwide competition – give their presentations in answer to the question, ‘Which place in the ancient world fascinates you the most?’

The finalists were:

Mason Forrest, Kirkham Grammar School –   The Underworld

Liv Sample, Bolton School –   The Roman Forum

Megan Maguire, Runshaw College –   Ephesus

James Fa, Blackpool Sixth Form College –   Babylon

To read more about the topics these fabulous finalists chose, read our blog Around the world in eighty…minutes

Our Competition judge, Dr Fiona Hobden of Liverpool University, had a difficult choice to make but, after offering helpful feedback, she crowned Megan Maguire the winner for her excellent research on Ephesus and her impressive, confident delivery. We look forward to launching next year’s competition in 2019!

The Lytham St Annes CA Junior Classics Competition 2018

In our inaugural Junior Classics Competition, five finalists from years 5-6 were tasked with answering the question ‘If you could travel back in time to the ancient world, where would you go?’ and, between them, they travelled through hundreds of years of ancient history and journeyed from Sicily to Rome and on to Greece. Our Competition Patron, Caroline Lawrence, the author of the Roman Mysteries series, watched all the presentations and offered her generous and helpful feedback to these budding young classicists:

Oliver Hinds, St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst –   Syracuse in the time of Archimedes

Josh Nickeas, Mayfield Primary School –     Ostia and Rome

James Wager, St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst –   Rome AD 79-80

Jessica Addy, AKS Junior School –  Epidaurus

Jonah Crouch, AKS Junior School –  Rome AD 80-81
