Classics Competitions 2018

Every year, the Lytham St Annes CA holds a Classics Competition for students in years 7-13 to produce and deliver a presentation in 15 minutes or less in response to a particular question about the ancient world. The competition is free to enter, and offers young people a fabulous opportunity at research and public speaking. We also hold a Junior Classics Competition for years 4, 5 and 6 pupils – further information can be found below.

The Lytham St Annes CA Classics Competition 2018

Are you a student in year 7-13 with an interest in the ancient world? Would you like the chance to research a particular ancient site or location and share your findings with like minded people in front of a friendly, appreciative audience? Would you like to win £100 and our prestigious trophy? Applications are now open for our Classics Competition 2018 to pupils who would like to produce and deliver a 15 minute (or less) presentation on ‘Which place in the Ancient World do you find the most fascinating?’

Just a few ideas of some fascinating locations!

Heats will be held in your school/college (if you are not attached to an institution you are still very welcome to enter the competition – please read the guidelines below and upload your entry to YouTube) and then a video of the winning student’s presentation should be uploaded to YouTube and notification of the title, name, school year, age and school/college of the presenter as well as a link to the YouTube video, must be received by the LSA CA Secretary at lsaclassics@gmail.com no later than 6pm on Friday 9th March 2018. There is no entry fee.

The members of the LSA CA committee will watch all the videos and choose up to five Finalists; schools/colleges will be informed by 12th March 2018 if their entrant has reached the Final.  Shortlisted video entries will receive a LSA CA Classics Competition Certificate. Each winning student must be available to attend the Final on Wednesday 21st March 2018 to be held at AKS Lytham, Clifton Drive South, Lytham St Annes, FY8 1DT at 7 pm.

The Final will be judged by the eminent historian, author and Patron of our Senior Competition, Professor Paul Cartledge, from the University of Cambridge. Professor Cartledge will also be holding a workshop on Democracy: Past and Present between 5-6pm on the evening of the final for students who have participated in the competition.

The Lytham St Annes CA Junior Classics Competition 2018

Junior Classics Comp 2017 Finalists

The finalists and judge of the 2017 Junior Classics Competition

Following our inaugural competition at AKS Junior School last year, we are now extending the competition to all year 4, 5 and 6 pupils in the Lytham St Annes area who would like to research, produce and deliver a 5-10 minute presentation on ‘If you could travel back in time to the Ancient World, where would you go?’  You can pick any location or site in the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece or Ancient Egypt!

Heats will be held in schools and then the winning entry of each school needs to be videoed or a member of the LSA CA committee will come to the school to watch the winning presentation. Notification of the winning entry must be received by LSA CA by 6 pm on Friday 2nd March.  The LSA CA committee will judge all video entries and choose up to five Finalists. Schools will be informed on Monday 5th March 2018 if their entrant has reached the Final.

Each school’s winning pupil must be available to deliver their presentation at the Final on Thursday 15th March 2018 to be held at AKS Junior School, King Edward Avenue, Lytham St Annes, FY8 1DP at 6.30 pm. Finalists must be at the school at 6pm.

The Final will be judged by the bestselling children’s author of the Roman Mysteries Series and Patron of the Junior Competition, Caroline Lawrence. Caroline is also holding a free workshop on ‘How to write a great story‘ which will take place between 2-3pm in the afternoon before the final. Participating schools will be invited to bring pupils free of charge to the workshop.
