Every year, the Lytham St Annes CA holds a Classics Competition for students in years 7-13 or equivalent (aged 11-18) to produce and deliver a presentation in 15 minutes or less in response to a particular question about the ancient world. The Competition is generously sponsored and supported by the Classical Association. Below is a template of the Guidelines that were used for the 2021 Competition, which was won by Martha Gayer.

The competition is open to all students in years 7-13 (aged 11-18) who would like to write and deliver an interesting presentation on ‘If you could travel back in time to one day in the ancient past, which would it be and why?” Please discuss your chosen day with your teacher before beginning work on your presentation. You may travel back to one twenty-four hour period in any part of the ancient world prior to 5th September AD 476.

Your presentation must be all your own work. Most students deliver a Powerpoint presentation but you can choose any style or format you like as long as it’s suitable for delivery on an online platform such as Zoom Webinar (you will have the ability to ‘share your screen’ to present a visual aid). It must be delivered in 15 minutes or less. Please note that if you reach the Final, in order to be fair to all contestants and for the Final to run on time, you will be asked to stop after 15 minutes whether you have finished or not so please practise and time your presentation to ensure this doesn’t happen to you!

There is no entry fee. Finalists must be willing to appear in publicity about the competition. Heats are held within your school and it is up to each school to decide on how they choose their winning presentation.

The Video

Please upload the video of your school/college’s winning presentation to YouTube as an UNLISTED (not public or private) video. Guidance on uploading films is available here. Please state in the description of your video that your presentation is an entry for the ‘Lytham St Annes Classical Association Classics Competition’ and include the following disclaimer: The views and opinions in this presentation are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the Lytham St Annes Classical Association.

Please email the LSA CA Secretary with notification of the title, and the name, school year, age and school/college of the presenter, as well as a link to the YouTube video. Entries received earlier than the deadline are very welcome; entries received after the deadline will be disregarded.
