It’s Competition time! Are you aged between 11-19 and have a passion for the ancient world that you would love to share with others? Would you like to be in with the chance of meeting Classicist and TV Historian Professor Michael Scott and winning some of our £400 prize money? If so, you have come to the right place!
The LSA CA’s 2019 Classics Competition invites students to choose and discuss their three favourite artefacts from the ancient world. From funeral masks to freestanding sculptures and frescoes, painted vases to mosaics, coins and jewellery (and so much more!), the judges want to know what makes the artefacts special to you and what you think they can teach us about the ancient world. You have a total presentation time of fifteen minutes in which to convince us that all of your artefacts are worthy of a top three place.
The competition is free to enter, you don’t have to be a member of the Association and it is open to all students aged 11-19 both in the UK and beyond. Each school or establishment picks their own winner whose presentation then needs to be videoed and sent to the Association (see here for the full guidelines) before the deadline of 6pm on Friday 25th January 2019. Entries do not have to be endorsed by a school or college – individual entries are also welcome from home-educated or independent students. Please just follow the same guidelines for entrants.
Four finalists will then be selected from our shortlist and invited to the Grand Final held on Saturday 9th February 2019 at AKS Lytham, Lancashire, FY8 1DT.
This annual speaking competition offers young people a fabulous opportunity to research, write and deliver their own presentation, in whatever format they feel is most appropriate, to an informed and supportive audience where a warm and enthusiastic welcome is guaranteed.
This year’s Competition also gives students a rare chance to present their work in front of one of the country’s best known classicists – our fantastic President, Professor Michael Scott. Whether presenting Ancient Invisible Cities on BBC TV or delivering a lecture to his students at the University of Warwick, Professor Scott’s love and knowledge of the ancient world shines through. We are thrilled he has agreed to judge this special competition to celebrate our first five years as the newest and largest branch of the Classical Association in the United Kingdom. All four finalists and their two guests are invited to join Professor Scott for lunch before the Competition.
